One Day

May 2009

Hello!

welcome

June is Bike Month!  In this issue, we’ll get you prepped with enough information on cycling services, routes, and maps to fill a pannier.  Don’t miss out on this month’s events celebrating cycling and much more.

One Day is a City of Vancouver initiative that encourages residents to take small actions in their daily lives to use less energy at home and on the move, to help protect the climate, and to make Vancouver the cleanest, greenest, healthiest city in the world.

One Day actions of the month

  1. Check out the latest and greatest bike routes, bike lanes and greenways  Vancouver has to offer.
    • Grab your helmet, hop on your bicycle and head to the newly opened Heather, Yukon, and Valley bikeway routes. (More to come in 2009!)
    • Wait on the edge of your bicycle seat for the Central Valley and Carrall Street greenways to officially open on June 27 and in fall 2009 respectively.
  2. Follow the “sharrows”.  These new symbols are being painted on streets where cyclists and motor vehicles share a busy street, but where there is not enough room for separate bike and vehicle lanes.
  3. Sign-up for Commuter Challenge, May 31 to June 6, and encourage your coworkers or schoolmates to walk, cycle, take transit, carpool (ride-share) or tele-work.

What's on trial?

On May 7, Council approved a trial intended to help determine if lane reallocation on the Burrard Bridge will provide a viable, relatively low-cost solution that works better for cyclists and pedestrians; will help to encourage the ongoing shift toward people choosing greener transportation choices; and will maintain the necessary flow of traffic over the bridge.  The Burrard Bridge Lane Reallocation Trial will begin in summer 2009.

This fall, City Council will decide on the fate of a demonstration of a public bike system for 2010.  Similar to systems existing in Paris, Barcelona and Montreal, Vancouverites may soon be able to check out bikes from several trial locations throughout Vancouver.  If all goes well with this trial, we can hope for a fully accessible public bike system in the future.  Coming soon:  Check out our events calendar for a mini-demo mid-June.

Did you know...

…that BCAA’s famous roadside assistance is now available for cyclists year round? A permanent benefit that’s automatically included with your membership!  If you find yourself with a flat, broken chain or worse, call BCAA and they’ll send a technician to help.  They’ll do their best to repair your bike on the spot, or transport you and your bike the same distance as they would your car under your membership plan.

One Day wonders

This month’s wonders are our local cycling organizations who work tirelessly to make cycling an integral part of the transportation culture in the Lower Mainland:  Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition; Better Environmentally Sound Transportation; Momentum Magazine; and the B:C:Clettes, an all-girl, bike inspired, street-performance collective.  For all the work that they do, a big thank you goes out to all of them.

Our second group of wonders are the Metro Vancouverites who are currently participating in Bike to Work Week.  These people are beating gridlock and getting out of traffic.  Watch this video and see how seven out of nine times, cyclists beat car drivers on their commute to work.

Feeling a little lost?

Never fear, the City of Vancouver has updated our bike route map and info guide. View it online or get your copy at the City Hall information desk, at your local community centre or by calling the Bicycle Hotline at 604.871.6070.  If you’re into energy conservation, pay special attention to the yellow arrows.  They’ll show you which routes have steep hills.

Know someone...

…who pedals their buns off in spin class or on the open road?   Forward this e-mail; they’ll love One Day!
