April 2011
Hello!
welcome
April 22 is Earth Day. Get out and celebrate.
In
this month’s issue we are sharing a few great green opportunities:
Greenest City grant funding for organizations, details of the new
LiveSmart Program for homes, AND the BC Hydro Energy Fix contest for
your favourite small business.
One Day
is a City of Vancouver initiative that encourages residents to take
small actions in their daily lives to use less energy at home and on
the move, to help protect the climate, and to make Vancouver the
cleanest, greenest, healthiest city in the world.

- Uganda and Lesotho, two countries with emerging economies, participated for the first time
- Scotland was the first country to have 100% of its cities commit to Earth Hour
- 422 Canadian cities, towns and municipalities took part, including 94 in BC

energy makeovers
For businesses: Last
fall, you loved watching the videos that documented the energy
transformation of Donald’s Market. Now there’s a chance to see
your favourite small business undergo a similar energy makeover, valued
at up to $35,000. Simply let them know to apply on or before April 29
through BC Hydro’s website.
For homes: If your home needs an energy makeover, we have GREAT news for you! On April 6 the Province
of BC, in partnership with BC Hydro and Fortis BC, announced the extension of the popular LiveSmart BC: Energy Incentive Program.
Rebates for improvements, such as insulation, draft proofing and high
performance windows and doors have increased by up to 700%, and
homeowners can now receive more than $7,000 in rebates.
in your city
Vancouver
aims to be the greenest city in the world by 2020. To reach this goal,
the $100,000 Greenest City Neighbourood Grant was established to
support four priority areas: green transportation, local food,
trees/greening and zero waste.
If you are interested in submitting a proposal, visit the Talk Green website for details. Deadline for applications is April 20.
One Day wonder
This
month’s wonder is the newly formed Lower Mainland Green Team.
Lyda formed this group to provide hands-on volunteer opportunities to
people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities. The team tackles
environmental issues facing our parks.
Lyda
organized their first event on March 6 and ever since, the group has
been having a blast pulling invasive species and planting native
species. Future activities will also include restoring wildlife
habitat, building trails, harvesting food, and cleaning up
debris. Visit their
website to learn more about this group or to join an activity.
