One Day

January 2009

Hello

welcome

From the staff of One Day, welcome to 2009! In this month’s issue, we’re featuring a few of our readers’ resolutions. Read on to meet our One Day wonders, find out about Vancouver’s sustainability related events and see how climate change issues have made their way into this year’s headlines.

One Day is a City of Vancouver initiative that encourages residents to take small actions in their daily lives to use less energy at home and on the move, to help protect the climate, and to make Vancouver the cleanest, greenest, healthiest city in the world.

New Year's eco-lutions

2009 resolutions from our readers.

Amy is committing to local shopping
“I am committed to buying everything possible from local companies in the New Year. From food and wine to bathroom soap and cleaners to clothes and jewellery, I will be checking labels and buying as close to home as I can. It’s my commitment to making sure that my dollars have 2-5 times the economic impact in BC’s economy, because when you buy local it supports local jobs and other local businesses. Buying from faraway companies and big multi-nationals drains wealth out of our economy, because the owner’s (or shareholders) profits and reinvestment aren’t spent locally. Especially in our current economy, we all need to make sure the dollars we do spend have a big multiplier effect with local business.” Amy, Vancouver

Kelly's family committed to a greener home
“Our family's resolutions are:
- Wash in cold and hang more clothes to dry instead of using the dryer
- Shop for kid's clothes and toys on websites like usedvictoria.com
- Turn the heat down while we aren't home” Kelly, Victoria

Made in Canada Diet
“I have recently been reading quite a bit about the ‘100 Mile Diet’ and while I would like to give this a shot it is a bit more than I think myself and my husband can handle at this time.  So beginning in the New Year we have decided to try a ‘Made in Canada’ diet first and then try to progress to a made in BC diet to get ourselves ready to try the real 100 Mile diet.” Anonymous, Vancouver

One Day wonders

This month’s wonders are the 2008 Bake for a Change contest participants. The contest inspired these eco-savvy bakers to build gingerbread houses with wind turbines, green roofs, solar panels and rain barrels.  Check out photos of the 2007 and 2008 homes suitable for even the most sustainable of all gingerbread men.

Viva la resolution!

Blogging about your new year’s resolution could win you up to $1,000 in ChangeEverything’s third annual resolution contest.  “Every year, so many of us make resolutions that come from our best intentions and then… nuthin’”.  Their contest will inspire you to hold strong to the things you intend to change.  Click here for contest details.
