January 2012
Hello!
WelcomeIt’s
a new year and this month is jam packed with events; from storytelling
and intergenerational dialogues to eco-chic evenings bringing together
Vancouver’s community of change-makers. There is something for
everyone, from youth to academics, city builders and advocates, to
those just wanting to save a little money on their bills.
One
Day is a City of Vancouver initiative encouraging residents to take
small actions to use less energy at home and on the move, to help make
Vancouver the greenest city in the world. Action of the month Elders, Boomers, Xer’s and Young Folk: Check out Re:generation, How we Move Our City.
Join this intergenerational dialogue sharing transportation stories: Jan 25, 7-10 pm at 149 W
Hastings, SFU Woodward’s. Tickets $5-10 (sliding scale).
Be
regaled about rail transit in Vancouver in the 1950s and bus transit in
the 1960s. Be inspired about a local pedal-powered urban cargo company.
Be empowered by the cooperative ownership of autos. Upgrade your home to save Deconstruct your home and salvage the parts Think
about how much material goes to a landfill when a typical house is
demolished. With a goal to salvage materials and avoid waste, the City
is now promoting deconstruction as an alternative to demolition.
Deconstruction permit holders will be eligible for a reduced rate at
the landfill for any residual materials that can't be recycled. The two
homes that participated in the Deconstruction pilot program diverted 90
per cent of their waste into reuse or recycling!
Stay warmer this winter for less Join the WWF for National Sweater Day on Feb 9. Turn down the heat and sport a fun sweater to show your commitment to action on climate change.
For other ways to stay warm while saving energy, check out BC Hydro’s current coupon offers,
which can save you 30 per cent off a water heater insulation blanket
and 20 per cent off an energy saving kit. Also check out online
interviews with Power Smart engineers who give you the energy saving basics for appliances, lighting and electronics. Did you know... …that
