One Day
March 2011

Hello!

welcome

In this month’s issue we’re asking you to go "lights out" on Saturday, March 26 for Earth Hour.  We’re also featuring a new energy-efficient laneway home and recognizing a Vancouver filmmaker who is passionate about energy conservation.

One Day is a City of Vancouver initiative that encourages residents to take small actions in their daily lives to use less energy at home and on the move, to help protect the climate, and to make Vancouver the cleanest, greenest, healthiest city in the world.

One Day wonder

This month’s wonder is Vancouver’s own Jaclyn A. Smith (JAX).  This producer, director, actor, musician and activist is passionate about causes like Earth Hour.  She’s pledged to continue her efforts to raise awareness about the need for energy consumption in the future.  Check her out in these clever shorts about energy conservation:

•    Get your sweater on!
•    Cold water
•    Piggyback bus ride
•    Thrift store

in your city

West House, a first-of-its-kind sustainable living laneway home, will be occupied by the end of this month.  The tenants' energy use will be monitored in this “living lab” over the next year-and-a–half.

This pilot project, spearheaded by the City of Vancouver, SFU and BC Hydro, aims to make it easier for people to reduce their energy use and environmental impact.  The home has the technology to allow the house to generate more energy than it consumes.  Features include solar panels, display screens to allow the tenants to monitor their water and energy use, and master energy controls as you enter/exit the home.
