May 2011
Hello!
welcome
This
month’s e-news is all about greening your way from point A to point
B. Whether you choose to tour the city by foot, hop on the Canada
Line to work, or book a car-share Smart Car for a Saturday at the
landfill, this month’s issue is for you. At the end of your read,
we hope that you’ll find yourself as inspired by one of our own Corporate Climate Leaders as we are.
One Day is
a City of Vancouver initiative that encourages residents to take small
actions in their daily lives to use less energy at home and on the
move, to help protect the climate, and to make Vancouver the cleanest,
greenest, healthiest city in the world.
actions of the month
This
month we are encouraging you to take part in two separate commuter
events. Be sure to have your participation counted (and to be
entered to win fabulous prizes) by tracking your commute online.
VACC Bike to Work Week
May 30 to June 5 Pump
up your tires, gather your co-workers and get your team registered for
a fun-filled week of cycling to work. You could earn bragging
rights or even a win a great prize (like a bike trip for two along the
Kettle Valley Trail). Stop by one of the commuter stations along the way for free food, coffee and prizes.
ICBC Commuter Challenge
June 5 to 11 This
event is asking you to think outside of your car! Leave your car
at home and reap the rewards of walking, cycling, ride-sharing, taking
transit or telecommuting. Celebrate active and sustainable
transportation during this week-long event during Canadian Environment Week.
in your city
car2go
is a new service in Vancouver whose entire fleet of 225 vehicles are
smart cars. Their rates are by the minute and include fuel, mileage,
maintenance and even parking. Pre-booking is not required, and you can
keep the car as long as you like without committing to a return time or
location. When you're done, simply park the car back within the
operating area and car2go takes care of the rest. Become a member by May 29, and Vancouver residents can skip the $35 registration fee (Promo Code: VAN). The vehicles will be ready
for rent in June.
One Day wonders
This month’s wonders are the folks at Canadian Direct Insurance.
We recognize this business as one of Vancouver’s first Corporate
Climate Leaders. Not only is this company voluntarily tracking their
greenhouse gas emissions, but they have committed to reduce GHGs by 15%
by 2015 (from their 2009 inventory)!
We are excited because this insurance company has already:
- provided hybrid vehicles for their road adjusters
- offered discounted pricing for customers with hybrid cars
- implemented paper reduction measures (like electronically storing claims and e-delivery of auto insurance policies)
We’re looking forward to hearing more from this climate leader on their future GHG reduction strategies.
did you know...
…the
Vancouver Landfill captures methane from your garbage? This
seemingly mundane project reduces Vancouver’s combined emissions by
over 5%, the equivalent of taking over 7,000 vehicles off the
road. Learn more about the landfill at their annual open house on Saturday, June 4 from 9 am to 3:30 pm.

…who loves long walks on the beach? Maybe they’d also like a BC Hydro’s offer for 15% off a walking tour gift certificate. Either way, forward this e-mail – they’re sure to love One Day.
