August 2009
Hello!
welcome
We’re
enjoying our summer, and we hope you’re enjoying yours. This
month, at the height of summer, we would like to inspire you to make
your summer getaway a bit more sustainable by enjoying Vancouver’s
communities by bike.
One Day is
a City of Vancouver initiative that encourages residents to take small
actions in their daily lives to use less energy at home and on the
move, to help protect the climate, and to make Vancouver the cleanest,
greenest, healthiest city in the world.
actions of the month
 1. Explore Metro Vancouver by bike with MEC Great Rides.
Hosted by the Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition, the rides aim to prove
two things: riding a bike is fun, and the Vancouver region is the best
place for biking in the world! You can join Great Rides on August 15 in Pitt Meadows, September 27 in Port Coquitlam and October 4 in Vancouver. (Cost is $15, free for
volunteers). 2.
When the City was founded in 1886, Vancouverites lived a little
differently. We walked and cycled, ate locally, worked and lived
in the same community, and knew our neighbours. This summer, historic
Mount Pleasant’s Main Street wants to relive that moment and is hosting
a market to visit our past and inspire our future. Bike over to Main Street - Market 1886 on August 16 and 23. Bicycle valet will be available. 3.
Have some fun this summer and bike to the PNE (Aug. 22 to Sept.
7). By biking you’ll avoid sitting in a hot car, battling traffic
and paying for parking. Once you arrive, check your bike at the
PNE’s
bicycle valet services.
line-ups
Music
line-ups – we wish! We’re talking the line-ups that are
inevitably part of your memories from summer vacations past. When
the waiting game doesn’t really seem like a game at all, before you go
check the estimated non-commercial delay times for the US borders online or by calling 604.542.4380. For BC Ferries, take advantage of their reservations options and limit the amount of time you spend waiting.
Any option you choose, we remind you not
to idle at the border or ferry terminals this summer.
Fact: Idling for more than 10 seconds uses more gas than restarting your engine. New: Wondering what the air quality is like today in your community? Visit the recently launched BC Air Quality website for current conditions and for information about the Provincial Idle Reduction Initiative.
wonders
This
month’s wonders are the staff at spud! who are helping us spread the
word about our home energy efficiency workshops to their
customers. We’d also like to take a moment to recognize spud! for
reducing GHG emissions associated with their groceries through their Buy Local and Carbon Neutral programs.
Our second wonders are being celebrated for their
just-completed solar project. The T'Sou-ke Nation’s 75 kilowatt project
is the largest of its kind in BC. This project is of a particular
interest because it will serve as a model to other First Nations across
the province that are off-grid and are currently relying on diesel
generators for their electricity.
your roadtrip
For those who will be making a road trip this summer, we suggest that you add to your pre-trip checklist a visit to BCAA’s Eco-Driving website.
Here’s our top three picks from the site: 1. Plan your route to avoid heavy traffic areas, construction, and hilly terrain to save fuel and time. 2.
Carrier (ski, bike and roof) racks should be removed when not in
use; they cause aerodynamic drag which increases fuel consumption. 3.
Using air conditioner during city driving can increase fuel
consumption by up to 20%. Try rolling down your windows and leave the
air conditioning for highway travel when rolling down the windows would
create an aerodynamic drag.

What's happening
Did you know...
…that
BEST’s Bicycle Valet program has parked 5,000 bikes so far this summer?
Event organizers have been working with BEST to provide a safe and
secure space for you to leave your bike. So forget the traffic jams and
having to park your car miles away at the next community event. Bike to
participating events and get VIP treatment with Bicycle Valet.
The
City of Vancouver, Translink, BCAA, MEC, Potter Lake Bamboo Fencing and
Vancity have all sponsored the program, with BCAA even providing some
of their staff to volunteer to park your bike at events.
