December 2009
Hello!
welcome
Happy holidays! Instead of the same old December issue, consider eco-friendly gifts and remember to offset your travel, this month we’re hoping to drive you to be more fuel efficient on the road.
Our January will be our last issue before the Olympics. It will tackle how to get around during the games and feature how the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games will be the greenest Games in history.
One Day is
a City of Vancouver initiative that encourages residents to take small
actions in their daily lives to use less energy at home and on the
move, to help protect the climate, and to make Vancouver the cleanest,
greenest, healthiest city in the world.
actions this month
Think Blue Sky
Do you walk, cycle or take public transit? Sign up for Project Blue Sky,
an online community where you can connect with Olympic and Paralympic
athletes and track your carbon reductions by logging your kilometres.
Get to know fuel efficiency More
efficient vehicles and fuel efficient drivers can make a big
difference. In fact, personal vehicles account for 32% of the
total greenhouse gas emissions in Vancouver.
Meet the winners of the 2010 ecoENERGY for vehicles awards!
If someone you know is thinking about purchasing a new vehicle, give
them a persuasive climate-friendly recommendation, whether they’re
looking for a wagon, a subcompact, a pickup, a minivan or even an
SUV. Set the wheels in motion with your co-workers by posting the
winners on your workplace bulletin board.
Want to see how other makes and models rank? Check out the EnerGuide label and compare your ride to that of the “best in class.”

One Day wonders
This month’s wonders are the staff at Green Workplace for their in-the-class and on-the-road Fuel Smart Driving Course
for Corporate Fleets. So far, 500 people have gone through their fuel
smart driving and instructor training courses. With their new
skills, these drivers are noticing an improvement of between 20-30% in
fuel economy, not to mention reducing approximately one tonne of
greenhouse gases per year. Some of Green Workplace’s clients
include UBC Plant Operations, the City of Port Moody and the City of
Courtenay – not to mention the City of Vancouver.
simply electrifying
Keep your eyes peeled for signs this town is going electric.
- Three
brand new Mitsubishi i-MiEV electric vehicles hit the streets on
November 20. They joined the Province, BC Hydro and the City of
Vancouver fleets.

- Charging
stations, like the public one at Sunset Community Centre, are sprouting
up at selected civic facilities, new condo buildings and new homes.
- Next year BC will be the launch point for the Renault-Nissan Alliance
zero-emission transportation program.
