Your vehicle fleet

If your company has a vehicle fleet, check out these programs and ideas for reducing operating costs and saving fuel.

Company car sharing

The Company Car, a subsidiary of The Car Co-op, and Zip Car are car sharing services aimed at business customers. These companies have fleets of hatchbacks, sedans, wagons and pick-up trucks available for work purposes

Natural Resources Canada - business vehicle programs

Little improvements can mean big gains. Check out the resources offered by NRCAN: FleetSmart, Fuel Management Workshop and the Idle Free Program.

Easy steps to reduce fuel consumption

Ensure proper vehicle maintenance. It is important to regularly check your tire pressure. And don't idling your car when you're parked. These measures are highly effective ways of cutting down on fuel. In Vancouver there is a by-law prohibiting parked vehicles from idling for more than three minutes.

Right-size your vehicles

Choose your fleet vehicles based on the job for which they are required. Downsizing to smaller and more efficient vehicles is one of the most significant ways to save on fuel costs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

City of Vancouver Programs

Your company can also contact the City of Vancouver at 604.871.6752 to find out more about City initiatives regarding private and public fleet operators. These campaigns include the bio-diesel fuel project, the idle free awareness campaign and idling by-law, the car-sharing for fleets initiative, vehicle right-sizing and a driver training program.

Car sharing

car sharing

Doug and his team manage the City of Vancouver's vehicle fleet. They've been working hard to reduce the GHG emissions through efforts like down-sizing vehicles and using biodiesel. Most recently, they've contracted The Car Co-op Company Car to replace a number of fleet vehicles at City Hall with low-emission Car Co-op vehicles. During work hours these car-share vehicles are used by City employees for work-related travel. On evenings and weekends the same vehicles are available for local Car Co-op members.

Biodiesel fleets

A number of local corporate and municipal fleets are using biodiesel produced from fryer oil at UBC.
