ODOS Program Traffic Safety Review

Traffic safety is important when encouraging students to walk or bike to school. To help, ODOS organizes a traffic safety review of the area surrounding the ODOS school.

How it works: City of Vancouver staff meet with administrators and parents of ODOS schools and conduct a walk around the neighbourhood surrounding the school property. During this walk, they observe traffic, existing traffic signage, pedestrian features (i.e. sidewalks and crosswalks) and parking regulations around the school. Requests for engineering improvements are reviewed, prioritized and executed through existing City programs.

For more information on school traffic safety reviews, please call 604.871.6611 or email us.

Cycling hotline

If you have any questions or concerns about the bicycle routes or cycling in the City, please contact the Bicycle Hotline at 311 or email us.  To find out more about cycling in Vancouver, please visit our website.

Parking enforcement

When vehicle traffic and congestion during pick-up and drop-off at your school is becoming a concern, please call Parking Enforcement at 604.257.8727 to request for enforcement.  This will help to improve driver behaviour around the school.  To find out more, please visit our website.

Idling

Help improve the air quality for the children at your school.  Unnecessary idling wastes fuel, pollutes the air, contributes to climate change and fouls your engine. Turning off your engine if you are going to be parked for more than 10 seconds will save fuel and is the simplest way to cut down on unnecessary greenhouse gas emissions.

In Vancouver, idling while parked has been against the law since July 2006. City bylaw enforcement officers can issue $50-$100 tickets for violators who idle longer than three minutes while parked. Check out Idlefree.ca or IdleFree BC for more information.

Be idle free!

idle sign

Do the cars and buses idling in front of your school drive you crazy? If your school is located within the City of Vancouver, you can request the installation of an "idle free" sign in your schoolyard.

Simply send the City an email with your school's name and the specific location where you've seen vehicles idling. (Include school specific maps/diagrams.)
