Our Community Bridging Celebration

At Trout Lake

The Community Bridging Celebration was held at Trout Lake on Sunday, September 21. More than 1,100 people gathered to share Aboriginal traditions and participate in healthy active living games. The celebration began with a "Welcoming Circle" that greeted all of those present and set the stage for an enjoyable afternoon of cultural celebration, recreation activities and community-building. Activities included wall climbing, canoe rides, stilt walking, pogo sticks, and juggling. An informal stage was set-up to feature a range of Aboriginal cultural performances.

The "Our Community Bridging Celebration" was made possible by a "Host a City Happening" grant sponsored by the Grandview Community Association, and supported by the Vancouver Aboriginal Community Policing Centre. Emma Sutherland from the Red Fox program and John Sakamoto Kramer from the Vancouver Aboriginal Community Policing Centre were the organizers of the event. The day was a great success! This was due in part to the significant staff support from Trout Lake Community Centre and by the support of many local organizations that included:

  • Urban Native Youth Association
  • Trout Lake Youth program
  • Collingwood Neighbourhood House
  • Vancouver Native Health Society
  • Network of Inner City Community Service Society
  • The Vancouver Police Department
  • The Red Fox program
  • Vancouver Coastal Health
  • Active Communities Vancouver
  • Cedar & Sage Youth program
  • The Vancouver Fire Department

There are many more Community Celebrations that will be forthcoming with support from the City's "Host a City Happening" program. Next up is:

  • Strathcona Community Centre on October 22 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm
