Walking Tips

Five Walking Tips
  • Wear the best walking shoes possible - whatever gives your arch support while being comfortable at the same time. Comfort is a key ingredient and your perfect shoe does not have to be expensive.
  • Cushioning counts- Make sure, especially if you are over 45, to wear cushiony socks or peds to compensate for the thinning of the fleshy pads on your heels and below the toes. You'd be surprised how this minor addition can improve the longevity of your walk.
  • Don't overdress - Know your internal body temperature and ensure you aren't overburdened with extra clothes which can cause overheating and cut short the walk. Take along a light weight day pack to carry a hat, slicker or sweater and be prepared for the weather and a comfortable walk.
  • Drink fluids - but not too much. Never allow yourself to get thirsty because this indicates dramatic dehydration. But over-hydration is also a problem. Find the perfect balance for you and put spring in your step!
  • Change your pace - While walking, do frequent spurts where you pick up the pace or add a hill or incline to get your heart pumping!
