2009 Public Consultation

Each year the Vancouver Park Board plans and carries out a wide range of projects and programs that impact residents, either directly or indirectly. These include facility and park development, new policies that guide decision-making or direct the way we carry out the work of the organization and deliver services to the public. Public meetings, open houses and workshops are opportunities for the Park Board to have open dialogue directly with the residents it serves to share information, build consensus, reduce conflicts, and plan together for the future.

Regular Park Board Meetings, held approximately every second week except for the month of August, are also open to the public.

Comments due by Sep 30, 2009 Pilot Project - Portable Toilets in Parks
In an effort to better serve park users, the Park Board is installing portable toilets on a trial basis in several of our busiest parks around the city, and will gauge public response to the project.

These portable toilets have been provided on a temporary basis through a generous donation to the VPB by the Super Save Group of Companies. It is expected that the toilets will remain in the parks for public use on a trial basis until October 31, 2009 to determine public response. At least two toilets will remain in place until at earliest the end of the year.

Portable toilets have been installed in China Creek North Park, China Creek South Park, George Park, Spanish Banks West, Stanley Park at Beaver Creek, Prospect Point (seawall level), Tisdall Park and VanTech Sport Field. A toilet will be installed at Third Beach soon.

We welcome your comments on this pilot project. Concerns regarding the conditon of specific toilets should be made directly to SuperSave at 604-533-4423.

A proposal has been made to donate the sculpture "Echoes (2003)" by Canadian artist Michel Goulet, to the Park Board and to install it at the west end of Kitsilano Beach on the grassy area north of the Watermark Restaurant located at Arbutus and Creelman Streets. This piece consists of 16 stainless steel chairs with text inscriptions engraved on the seats. The application has been made through The Vancouver Biennale Foundation. As part of the approval process, the Vancouver Park Board welcomes comments and thoughts on the project from the community. If approved, work will be installed in the summer of 2009. For more information, please see the flyer posted at the Kitsilano Community Centre (2690 Larch Street).

Stanley Park Forest Management Plan
The Park Board will hold two public open house sessions to present information and provide an opportunity for the public to discuss and comment on the proposed Forest Management Plan for Stanley Park. The Management Plan is intended to provide an overview of various management practices required to realize the Vision Statement first published in the Stanley Park Restoration Plan in April 2007 – "That Stanley Park's forest be a resilient coastal forest with a diversity of native tree and other species and habitats, that allows park visitors to experience nature in the city."

The plan was developed in coordination with the University of British Columbia and the Stanley Park Ecology Society and includes various modules pertaining to Tree Hazard Mitigation, Wind Resilience, Insect and Disease Management, Culturally Modified Trees and Wildlife.
