The Vancouver Park Board is holding an information meeting regarding the Mount Pleasant Skate Spot for park neighbours. Local residents are invited to meet with Commissioner Sarah Blyth and staff to hear about upcoming programming and operations, and to ask questions. We look forward to meeting with you. The Park Board held an open house at Simon Fraser Elementary School on June 21, 2010 to provide an opportunity for the public to review and comment on ideas for uses of the upgraded park. Please refer to the panels below which were on display at the open house. They include a general concept for discussion purposes and a series of photographs of uses people may be interested in being developed into the park. The concept plan allows for, as directed by the Board in December 2009, the future development of an outdoor pool and change rooms at such time as funds for them may become available. A pool will not, however, be included in the park reconstruction. Based on community input, a revised concept plan was prepared for a second open house held September 22. The panels from this open house are shown below. The Board approved a concept design on November 1, 2010. Construction is scheduled to begin in Spring 2011. Project UpdatesApril 23, 2012 The south side of the park (including the skatespot and playground) is now open to the public. The north half of the park remains an active construction site and is closed to the public to ensure public safety. November 2011 While construction of the skate spot is complete, it is situated within an active construction site. For safety reasons, we have placed sand on the surface of the skate spot to prevent use and it will remain closed for approximately the next month as construction around it is finalized. Recognizing the great interest in and anticipation for this new facility, we are making every effort to expedite the opening of the skate spot along with other surrounding elements such as the playground, landscaped areas and pathways. Target date for opening of the skate spot and south side of the park is early Spring 2012. We appreciate the cooperation of skate boarders in the interim. October 2011 Community Garden is open and available for the gardeners to beginning building. September 2011 A final concept plan for the proposed skatespot is complete. Construction through a design-build contract with New Line Skateparks is scheduled to begin on September 26th. Here is the updated concept plan: July 2011 Metro Vancouver, working in cooperation with the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation, will be removing a large Oak tree in Mount Pleasant Park on Manitoba Street between W. 15th and W. 16th Avenues. This removal is necessary in order to complete repairs to the Cambie Trunk Sewer, and ensure the safety of area residents and businesses. The tree will be removed over a period of two weeks. To compensate for this removal, Metro Vancouver will provide funding to the City of Vancouver to plant an additional three trees within the park. There will be some noise associated with this work as chainsaws will be required and a chipper will be used for the tree limbs. The remaining wood debris will be hauled off site for reuse.
Questions regarding the project can be directed to: Questions regarding the tree removal can be directed to Tiina Mack, Manager of Park Development. March, 2011 Construction of the Mt Pleasant Park Upgrade will begin late March 2011 with completion scheduled for Autumn 2011. Features of the park upgrade include a central great lawn area, new playgrounds, sports court, parking lot, entry level skate spot, community garden*, a variety of seating options, universally accessible paths and trails, a rain garden for stormwater management, distinct park entrances, picnic areas and additional soft landscaping with native plants. A site for a future outdoor pool has been reserved east of the sport court. *contact mtpleasantcommunitygarden@gmail.com if you are interested in the community garden Community ParticipationSeptember 22, 2010 - Public Open House ![]() Context Plan ![]() Concept Plan ![]() Play Components June 21, 2010 - Public open house Reports & Links
