2010 Winter Games topiary sculptures installed February 8

February 5, 2010 (No. 4) - Media are invited to the installation of three large Winter Games themed topiary sculptures at Harbour Green Park on Monday, February 8 beginning at 5 am. The sculptures depict a hockey player, a curler and the words '2010 Vancouver' and are decorated with over 10,000 plants.

The first two sculptures will be unloaded from flat deck trucks beginning at 5 am. One truck will then return to Sunset Nursery to transport the third sculpture. It is expected to be back onsite between 6 and 7 am. Once in place, minimal landscaping and securing of the sculptures will take place.
             When: Monday, February 8, 2010, beginning at 5 am
             Where: Harbour Green Park, West Cordova Street at Bute Street

Background:

  • The three sculptures were constructed by Park Board fabrication shop staff
  • Sunset Nursery staff wrapped the frames in groundcover cloth and filled the cloth with soil. Then over 10,000 drought-resistant plants were added.
  • The sculptures were first displayed at VanDusen Botanical Garden in 2009
  • The tallest, the hockey player, is about 12 feet high
  • There are over 10,000 plants growing on the sculptures
  • The plants include Semper Vivum, Thyme, Sedum, Santolina, Muehlenbeckia, Ajuga, Lysimachia, Armeria and Leptinella
  • The curling stone is fabricated from a beer keg
