We make a life by what we give

"We make a living by what we get; we make a life by what we give." This inspiring quote is from Winston Churchill, and we found it on Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation material after they sent Standard Life an information package on their fundraising campaign.

Following a devastating windstorm in December 2006 that has caused upwards of $4 million in damage, the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation is striving to save the magnificent Stanley Park. This was a real disaster for this emblem of Vancouver, which is notably the third largest urban park in North America and one of the most popular parks in Canada receiving 8 million visitors a year.

Mick Kelly, Regional Sales Director, Retail Markets, for the Western region, as many citizens in Vancouver felt that he must do something to support this fundraising and ask Standard Life to contribute. "Any donations to the Park Board, and particularly this fund, will make a significant difference," wrote Mick to the Public Relations team. In turn, Standard Life was pleased to donate $2,000 to dedicate a tree in Stanley Park. "I'm very proud that Standard Life used this opportunity as a corporate citizen to help in this important initiative," said Mick.

Our donation will provide for the planting and preservation of a tree. So next time you'll have the chance to visit Stanley Park, look for the Standard Life tree and take a moment to think about Winston's words.

The Park Board is grateful to Mr. Kelly and Standard Life Canada for its support of the Stanley Park Restoration Project.
