The Shakespeare Garden in Stanley Park

Shakespeare Garden Enhancement

In July 2008, a complete inventory of the Shakespeare Garden was undertaken. This research and field study produced an inventory of over 45 trees in the Shakespeare Garden area. It also exhumed an almost forgotten history of this sacred grove.

Analysis of the area brought to light some shortcomings of the garden that could easily be rectified. The Shakespeare Monument is hidden from the view from paths in the area. Accessibility is limited because there is no path to approach the monument or to circulate through the garden. Signage could be improved for the trees that were planted over the past eighty years, as an homage to Shakespeare.

Some design solutions have been identified that could make this garden a much more useable and celebrated space. These solutions include shifting the Shakespeare monument within the garden to a more visible location, creating a path system to allow greater access and circulation through the garden, and creating a more formal method to highlight the notable trees.

The Park Board is fundraising to enact enhancements to the Shakespeare Garden. If you wish to support this endeavor, please click on the links to learn how you can donate.
