Happy Hearts
The support you need to fight and prevent heart disease
Are you living with heart disease or at risk of developing it?
Do you want to prevent cardiac conditions and make a healthy lifestyle change?
The Happy Hearts program was created to provide a community based exercise program for people with heart disease (heart attack, angina, angioplasty, open heart surgery and/or heart failure) and for those who are at risk of developing them (obesity, hypertension, smoking, diabetes, sedentary lifestyle and/or strong family history of premature coronary artery disease).
The VGH Centre for Cardiovascular Health and the Vancouver Park Board have partnered to create a supportive environment where participants are taken through specialized exercise programs and educational seminars with trained professionals, and are given access to Park Board fitness centres, pools, and ice rinks at a minimum cost.
The Happy Hearts programs (group exercise classes and educational seminars) are held at Dunbar and Kensington Community Centres through two unique course divisions:
Happy Hearts Maintenance
For participants who have completed a hospital based cardiac rehabilitation program within the last year.
This program includes:
- Group exercise classes once a week led by instructors with the education and experience to support those with cardiac conditions
- Specialized equipment designed for cardiac patients
- A supportive community environment where attendees can continue to practice their skills and knowledge that they recently acquired from a hospital based cardiac rehab program
- Patrons enrolled on the Happy Hearts Maintenance can also attend the weekly education seminars on nutrition, blood pressure, setting goals, physical activity, managing stress, and diabetes offered to the Happy Hearts Plus program participants (optional).
- Monthly visits from a Happy Hearts Coordinator from the VGH Cardiac Rehabilitation Clinic to provide extra support, encouragement, and answer any questions
Additional access to all Park Board Fitness Centres, Pools and Rinks
