Gangs / Drugs Section
The Vancouver Police Department's Gangs / Drugs Section is made up of the Gang Crime Unit, the Drug Unit, and the Grow Busters Unit.
The Gangs / Drugs Section is accountable to the Deputy Chief Constable, Operations Support Division.
Gang Crime Unit
The Gang Crime Unit (GCU) is a resource not only to the Department, but to other law enforcement and intelligence agencies. The Unit targets street gangs, ethnic based gangs, organized crime groups and outlaw motorcycle gangs.
Members of the Unit are responsible for developing intelligence on these groups and disrupting their criminal activity through enforcement and prosecution.
Gang-involved crime includes, but is not limited to, drug trafficking and manufacturing, firearm offences, abductions, frauds and other property-related offences.
Drug Unit
The Drug Unit is responsible for the investigation and enforcement of all drug-related offences under the Controlled Drug and Substance Act. This includes the investigation of drug traffickers and their distribution systems, ranging in quantities from multi-kilo to street level sales.
The Drug Unit also assumes the responsibility for the investigation, processing and dismantling of all clandestine methamphetamine and ecstasy Labs in the City of Vancouver. Drug unit members take an active role in educating the community and other police members on drug-related matters.
Grow Busters Unit
The Vancouver Police Department's Grow Busters Unit was formed in 1999 to deal with marijuana grow operations that were becoming a problem throughout the Lower Mainland.
Grow Busters is responsible for identifying, investigating, processing and dismantling marijuana grow operations in the City of Vancouver. The Unit also provides education to other police agencies and the public.
