Greater Vancouver Integrated Road Safety Unit (IRSU)

The Integrated Road Safety Units in B.C. are comprised of both RCMP and municipal police officers. They are dedicated, mobile enforcement units that work closely with other road safety partners to tackle the most serious traffic issues in their particular areas through strategic enforcement, education and presence.

The IRSU Mandate:

  • harm reduction on BC roadways
  • strategic traffic enforcement in high collision areas in order to reduce the number of serious injury and fatal collisions on BC roads
  • focus on distracted and aggressive driving, and impaired drivers – the three factors that contribute to most of the carnage on our roads (impaired driving is still the #1 criminal cause of death in Canada)
  • commercial vehicle enforcement
  • criminal interdiction
  • assist municipal and provincial traffic enforcement units with strategic traffic enforcement operations
