Vancouver Speed Watch
The Vancouver Speed Watch program came into being on April 1st, 1996, as a branch of Citizens' Crime Watch. Volunteers monitor speeds throughout the city including school and playground zones. Using portable radar equipment and electronic signboards for feedback, drivers are made aware of their speed as they travel along neighbourhood streets. Information gathered by volunteers is used to determine if an area requires additional enforcement from Traffic members.
The Speed Watch Program will also assist in addressing specific traffic problems through:
- increased police awareness
- public and community education
- Vancouver City Traffic and Transportation Section
- neighbourhood action
- traffic calming
If you have a traffic concern in your neighbourhood, Speed Watch may be able to help. Contact the Traffic Support Unit at (604) 717-2999.
Applicants who wish to join the Speed Watch Program have to meet the following criteria:
- 19 to 75 years of age
- have a clean driving record
- able to volunteer four hours a month
- commit for one year initially
- willing to complete necessary training
If you meet the above requirements and wish to volunteer, contact the Traffic Support Unit at (604) 717-2999.
