Police Information Checks (PIC) are done at our 2120 Cambie Street location only.

Police agencies across B.C., including both municipal and federal RCMP, have adopted consistent Guidelines for Police Information Checks.

The Vancouver Police Department offers two comprehensive types of service:

1. Police Information Check – Vulnerable Sector (PIC-VS)

2. Police Information Check – Non-Vulnerable Sector (PIC)

Please note, cases where non-disclosable information indicates a significant threat to public safety, police agencies may either refuse to complete the check or take action under their duty-to-warn responsibilities.

Determining Suitability

The Vancouver Police Department plays a neutral role in determining suitability regarding employment and/or volunteer risk assessment. By providing the service of a Police Information Check (PIC), the VPD is in no way making a recommendation as to the suitability of the applicant for the position, nor should the agency consider the existence of police information to mean a compulsory disqualification of the individual.

It is important to note that information contained within a PIC is based in part upon information provided by the applicant, and the VPD cannot guarantee it will identify all information pertaining to the individual.

How to Apply

The Vancouver Police Department provides this service to the citizens of Vancouver; non-residents must attend their local police agency.

If your identification does not include your Vancouver address, you must also provide proof of residency in Vancouver (this can be a current bank statement or utility bill that is in your name).

Police Information Check applicants must attend in person at the main office located at 2120 Cambie Street.

We are open seven days per week, including statutory holidays, from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Please note that the 2120 Cambie Public Service Unit closes promptly at 5:00 pm. Depending on the number of customers waiting, we may not be able to serve you before closing time. For your convenience, we suggest you visit us in the morning or on weekends when our queue is typically shorter. The afternoons are often very busy, with wait times of up to an hour or more. Should you be turned away, you will be given a note that allows you priority service the following day.

Police Information Check applications are processed in order of date received. The length of time it takes to complete a check can depend on our customer volume. Typically, VPD PIC service standard for a completed PIC is three to five business days. If the applicant has lived elsewhere in Canada in the past five years or the application requires further review, the process can take up to four weeks.

Completed Police Information Checks will be mailed to the applicant's home address upon completion.

Police Information Check Steps

  1. Fully complete the VPD Police Information Check form. This form can be downloaded by clicking the link above or picked up in person at our location.

  2. Bring the completed form with you along with the necessary identification and fees to the Vancouver Police Department at the 2120 Cambie Street location only.

  3. Identification must be presented in person to submit your Police Information Check. We require two pieces of current, government-issued identification, one of which must have a current photo.

    Acceptable forms of identification are:
    • valid driver's licence (with photo)
    • valid BC Identification Card (with photo)
    • valid passport
    • valid permanent residency card
    • current student ID for youth applicants only (ages 12 to 17)
    • birth certificate
    • valid citizenship card
    • valid native status card
    • valid nexus card
    *The new BC Services Card, introduced in February 2013, combines the BC driver’s licence and Care Card. The card is considered one form of identification.

    We do not accept S.I.N. cards or cards from any financial institution as identification (credit or debit cards). If your identification does not include your Vancouver address, you must provide proof of residency (bank statement or utility bill that is in your name).

  4. Volunteer Authorization - if you are volunteering a service or if you are a student currently attending a learning institution, the Vancouver Police Department requires a document on agency letterhead from the organization requesting the Police Information Check which includes:
    • the applicant’s name
    • whether the applicant will be involved with or responsible for children or the
    • vulnerable sector
    • verification that the applicant is volunteering a service or is a practicum
    • the name and title of the person requiring the Police Information Check, as
    • well as the full agency address and phone number
    We will require the following information in person:
    • the agency name, address, phone number
    • the name of the person in authority
    • an envelope with your mailing address (can also be completed at the counter)
  5. All applicants will be charged a fee for obtaining a Police Information Check. The Vancouver Police Department accepts cash, debit, VISA, and MasterCard for payment. The fee schedule is as follows:

Do you require more than one Police Information Check? It will cost $10 for each additional embossed original. In order to offer this reduced fee, you will need to make the request on the same date that you apply - this cannot be backdated or offered on a future date.

Current Processing Date

Police Information Check applications are processed in order of date received.

We have completed applications received on or before September 12, 2017. Please allow additional time for mailing.

A Police Information Check that requires further research may take up to four weeks or more to be processed.

Scam Alert

Vancouver Police are aware of a scam involving people from other countries applying for work in Vancouver through employment agencies. These companies promise work in exchange for large sums of money to be sent by wire transfer for security background checks.

The VPD does not request payment by money wire transfer for any of their services.
