Why this bridge?
The Burrard Bridge carries as many cyclists as the other two False Creek bridges (Granville and Cambie) combined. Of the three bridges, the Burrard Bridge is the least suitable for heavy traffic and the most suitable for cycling and walking.
David Rawsthorne from Transportation Engineering speaks about the challenges on the Burrard Bridge
With the heaviest cycling and walking volumes of any crossing, the Burrard Bridge Lane Reallocation Trial is further supported by traffic studies from 1994 to 2004, showing a 180% increase in daily bike trips around the city, as well as a 44% increase in walking trips and a promising 10% decrease in the number of vehicles entering Vancouver.
In reallocating just one out of 30 vehicle lanes providing access over and around False Creek, the City is proceeding with the most cost-effective way to provide more space and reduce pedestrian/cyclist conflicts; avoiding a minimum $30 million dollar cost to widen the sidewalks.
