Residential Food Scraps Collection

Benefits of composting

Up to 42 per cent of typical household "garbage" is actually compostable. Garbage from single-family residences consists of approximately 14 per cent fruit/ vegetable food scraps, 11 per cent meat/ bread/ dairy food scraps, 10 per cent food-soiled paper and 7 per cent yard trimmings.

By composting, you will divert thousands of tonnes of organic material from the landfill and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. You will also use your in-sink garbage disposal less, reducing energy use and the cost to treat wastewater.

In the end, the compost produced from food waste replaces commercial fertilizers. It is used in gardens to grow food or flowers and to replenish depleted topsoil.
