Your feedback will help the City determine the best way to introduce an expanded food scraps recycling program for all Vancouver homes in the future.
If you live in Riley Park or Sunset, you may have been selected to be part of an expanded food scraps recycling pilot program.
It’s been successful so far and we’re going to continue the weekly collection of food scraps and yard waste and bi-weekly garbage collection until further notice. Look for more information later this year.
As part of the pilot, we would like you to put all food scraps in your yard trimmings cart instead of your garbage cart. This includes:
- Raw and cooked foods
- Fruits and vegetables
- Meat, fish and bones
- Noodles, rice, beans, grains and bread
- Dairy products like cheese, yogurt and eggshells
- Tea bags, coffee grounds and filters
- Food-soiled paper products like pizza boxes and napkins

Are you part of the pilot?
Approximately 2,000 households in Riley Park and Sunset have been selected to participate in the pilot. If your household is selected, you will receive more information in the mail before the program launches.
New collection schedule
Your original pilot program collection calendar ended in February 2012. We’ve replaced it with an interim schedule you should have received in the mail. We will continue with the weekly food scraps/yard trimming collection and bi-weekly garbage collection for the next few months.

This switch in collection weeks will make it easy for you to recycle your food scraps and ensure the scraps that may smell bad or rot quickly continue to be collected weekly in your yard trimmings cart.
We understand there may be some extra garbage for the first few weeks after we switch to bi-weekly garbage collection. We anticipate that when you move all of the food scraps from your garbage cart to your yard trimmings cart as part of the pilot program, the volume of your garbage will decrease as you get used to the program.
No cost to upgrade your yard trimmings or garbage cart
Pilot households can upgrade the size of their yard trimmings or garbage cart for free for the duration the pilot.
