Cultural Legacies
The diversity, depth and breadth of the arts, culture and recreational activity contributes to the essence of the city and quality of life in Vancouver. Quality of life is a key civic asset. Building cultural legacies in sport and recreation, arts, literacy, and volunteerism is part of sustainable Vancouver.
Creative City
Vancouver's municipal government recognizes the importance of the creative sector to citizen health and well-being, to the city's liveability, and to its economic future. A healthy arts and culture community helps the City attract knowledge-based businesses, workers, and tourists—all of which boosts the local and regional economy.
Vancouver City Council supported a three-year creation process towards publishing Vancouver's new Culture Plan with concurrent significant increased support to the arts and culture community. Now that the Culture Plan is adopted, Council has endorsed the implementation of several significant new policies and strategies for the arts and culture sector:
- new policy framework for the City’s Cultural Grants and support programs
- new policy framework for the City’s Public Art programs
- Cultural Infrastructure priority plan
- Cultural Tourism Strategy
The City will continue to engage citizens of Vancouver in further planning processes focused on Economic Partnerships, Awareness and Participation, Neighbourhood Cultural Plans and the Learning City as well as in ongoing Creative City initiatives, such as the Creative City Conversation, in the months and years to come.
