Southeast False Creek and Olympic Village

Southeast False Creek (SEFC) is a leading model of sustainability – turning a former industrial brownfield site into a mixed use, mixed income neighbourhood that incorporate forward-thinking infrastructure, strategic energy use reduction, high performance green buildings and easy transit access.

The first phase of SEFC was the site of the Olympic and Paralympic Village for the 2010 Winter Games.

When fully developed, SEFC will have abut 5,000 residential units, 12,000-16,000 citizens, a community centre, childcare facilities, and elementary school, restored heritage buildings and 26 acres of park and redeveloped waterfront.

The first phase of SEFC includes many green features:

  • SEFC buildings and neighbourhood are designed to LEED® Gold, with a LEED® Platinum community centre.
  • The building design includes urban agriculture, rainwater management systems and green roofs. The rainwater is reused for toilet flushing and landscape irrigation.
  • The community's energy efficient buildings are connected to the City's first renewable Neighbourhood Energy Utility.
  • The neighbouhood's net-zero building is anticipated to produce as much energy as it uses.
  • SEFC provides access to bus, ferry, streetcar, SkyTrain and Canada Line, as well as electric vehicle charging stations and car share vehicles.
  • Shoreline works include the new island and inter-tidal fish habitat, a boardwalk, and a seaside bikeway. Public space rainwater is being treated in a stormwater wetland.
