Sustainable Commuting Program

City Hall campus employees are taking up the green commuting challenge, and doing their part towards making Vancouver the world’s greenest city.

In 2009 the City of Vancouver launched a sustainable transportation program for employees at City Hall. The goal? To reduce the carbon footprint of our collective commute. We hope that other organizations in Vancouver will follow our green lead.

The City has significantly reduced the number of vehicles coming to City Hall each day by providing incentives for sustainable modes of commuting, implementing pay parking at City Hall lots and making car share vehicles available so employees don’t need to drive to work.

Incentives for Sustainable Commuting

City Hall employees making the move to sustainable commuting can take advantage of:

  • Incentive r ebates on transit passes
  • Monthly incentives and access to reserved parking for staff who ride-share
  • Incentives for biking, walking, skateboarding and rollerblading, such as gift cards for rain gear, as well as, cycling skills courses and subsidized bike tune-ups
  • A Guaranteed Ride Home program in the event of an emergency or sickness

Employee Pay Parking

The Sustainable Commuting Program incentives are funded through the introduction of pay parking at market rates for employees at all City Hall lots.

Car Sharing

The City has introduced a car sharing program in partnership with The Co-operative Auto Network’s (Car Co-op) subsidiary, The Company Car. This provides better access for employees who require a car for work purposes and is more efficient than the previous departmental vehicles system.

Car sharing at City Hall also helps the neighbouring community as the vehicles stationed here are available for use on evenings and weekends to residents who are members of the Car Co-op.
