Environmental Plan
Environmental protection is a key direction of a Sustainable Vancouver. Alongside climate protection initiatives such as One Day and the Climate Change Action Plans the City protects the quality of our air, water and land. The Environmental Protection Branch ensures the environmentally sustainable management of stormwater, hazardous waste disposal and waste entering sewers.
Current projects include:
Stormwater
In conjunction with the Green Building Strategy the Environmental Protection Branch and the Sewers Branch in Engineering we will be looking at stormwater issues on public and private lands in the City of Vancouver. This includes Still Creek. Still Creek is one of only two remaining visible streams in urban Vancouver. In partnership with the Planning department and neighbouring municipalities Environmental Protection is creating an integrated stormwater management plan for the Creek.
Construction Site Waste
In partnership with Solid Waste Management the Environmental Protection Branch will be working to develop a construction site waste management strategy.
The City Environmental Policy and Environmental Plan (1996) commits the City to:
- Ensuring environmental considerations are integrated into all City of Vancouver decisions respecting planning, growth, service delivery, finance, and operations;
- Initiating and promoting compliance with City by-laws protective of the environment;
- Advocating for appropriate environmental protection actions by other levels of government and the private sector;
- Ensuring that the City's own operations comply with environmental legislation;
- Involving and communicating with citizens and businesses in the establishment and attainment of the City's environmental objectives;
- Encouraging and demonstrating the wise use of natural and fiscal resources; and
- Adopting and updating an environmental agenda and action plan to achieve the City's environmental objectives.
