Applications drop-down menuCalculate Areas

Calculate Areas enables you to calculate the area(s) of a selected map object(s) of a polygon layer. A polygon must first be selected for the area calculation to take place. This could be a lot polygon or any of the other polygons in VanMap such as DCL areas, zoning districts, etc. (for these other polygon types, the relevant polygon layer must be turned on first).

  1. Select a polygon map object and then select Calculate Areas from the applications list box.
  2. Use the Shift key to select multiple items in sequence and the Ctrl key to select non-sequential multiple items.
  3. To get the results, select the Report button.
  4. A window will appear displaying the map object name(s), the area in square metres and the total area in square metres.
  5. Please note the disclaimer information that appears.

  6. You can close or minimize the results window, select another polygon and click the Report button again. This clears the previous request and will display the calculation for the current polygon selection.
  7. Though this function is available on a point or line layer, area calculation is most useful for a polygon layer. A selected map object of a point or line layer has a calculated area of zero.
