Definition:

Commuter bikeways are designed to provide safe, direct and convenient routes with fewer cars, less noise and better air quality making bikeways a good choice for cyclists traveling to school or work. The City constructs bikeways throughout Vancouver to form a citywide bicycle route network of commuter and recreational bikeways. Bikeways are identified in several ways, including green bicycle route signs placed every second block.

Bikeway routes are typically on local streets where cyclists share the road with other users. However, some sections of a bikeway may be on a path or on a major roadway. Where a bikeway crosses higher volume roads, centre medians or cyclist/pedestrian signals are often installed. Traffic calming measures may be installed along the length of a bikeway to reduce speeds and discourage non-local motor vehicle traffic.
