Definition:
The City of Vancouver has over 650 traffic signals which have been installed at strategic locations throughout the city. They are used to assign right-of-way to the different users, such as pedestrians, bicycles, transit, and others. Each signalized intersection operates with an on-site controller and communicates information to a central computer at City Hall. Changes to timing plans, the amount of green time for the different movements, can be assigned for time of day, day of week or for any other reason such as a major special event. The City of Vancouver maintains its traffic signal equipment and also constructs approximately 10 new signals each year.
