Vancouver's current capital budget
The capital budget is the amount of money the City spends creating and running our systems, structures, and facilities.
This includes water pipes, sidewalks, libraries, community centres, fire halls, affordable housing, parks, recycling trucks, and more.
Most of these expenses are planned over the long term. For example, programs such as sewers and waterworks are managed on a 100-year replacement cycle.
How we prioritize our investments
To manage these expenses properly, the City uses a three-stage planning process:
- Capital Strategic Outlook - A ten year, high-level strategy for capital assets and investments
- Capital Plan - A three year agenda with public consultation, culminating in a referendum
- Capital Budget - Combines a one-year budget with a two-year forecast
