2050 projections
Local climate projections show that we can expect:
- Warmer temperatures year-round
- More extreme heat days in summer
- Longer, hotter, and more frequent heatwaves
Extreme heat events are prolonged periods of unseasonably high temperatures. It is responsible for more weather-related deaths in Canada in an average year than any other hazard.
Climate change is making extreme heat events more common.
Building the future we want
A city that is resilient to extreme heat means:
- Improved access to cooling and thermal safety at home
- Better access to public cooling spaces and community supports
- Expanded tree canopy and green space, particularly in neighbourhoods disproportionately impacted by the urban heat island effect
