Extreme heat events are prolonged periods of unseasonably high temperatures. It is responsible for more weather-related deaths in Canada in an average year than any other hazard.

Climate change is making extreme heat events more common.

Building the future we want

A city that is resilient to extreme heat means:

  • Improved access to cooling and thermal safety at home
  • Better access to public cooling spaces and community supports
  • Expanded tree canopy and green space, particularly in neighbourhoods disproportionately impacted by the urban heat island effect
