Car free day on Main Street

Volunteering is a productive and rewarding way to connect and contribute to the well-being of your community.

Here is a list of Vancouver-area organizations who rely on volunteer help from community members to make the city a better place for all of us to live.


Car Free Day Vancouver

This completely volunteer-led festival celebrates healthier and happier communities each June and promotes active transportation, community engagement, and sustainability. The festival sites, located on car-free streets, allow people to spread out and safely enjoy activities, food, and music. Car Free Day Vancouver is looking for volunteers for all their events: Commercial Drive, Main Street, or West End.

Green Chair Recycling

This social enterprise provides services and solutions to help reduce the environmental impact of events. The volunteer team monitors recycling bins to maximize recycling, educate the public, and inspire others. The team is passionate about recycling and having fun doing it.

Food and gardening

Earthsave Canada

Join a Vancouver-based registered charity that advocates the move towards a more whole foods, plant-based diet for environmental sustainability, better health, and compassion toward animals. Earthsave Canada believes that communities are stronger when they set a table that people from all cultures and beliefs can enjoy. Looking for volunteers to help with outreach, fundraising, and organizing events.

Growing Chefs!

Join a team of chef volunteers and grow vegetables, cook with kids, and get the kids excited about eating healthy food. During the first visit, plant windowsill gardens with the students, then return every 2 weeks for 3.5 months to help the kids care for the gardens, taste new food, and do lessons on urban agriculture and cooking. At the end of the program, the chefs help the kids prepare delicious meals with the vegetables they have grown.

Environmental Youth Alliance (EYA)

This youth driven non-profit organization is dedicated to the health of the urban environment, the planet, and the well-being of its people. EYA is currently looking for volunteers who are looking for hands-on experience growing your own food in the city.

Fresh Roots'

Get outside and grow with Fresh Roots farms! Step into the world of urban farming and share your knowledge with their schoolyard farms. Join weekly drop-in "Garden Helpers" shifts as a farm-tastic way to have fun, learn new skills, and help grow your community.

Oak Street Farmers' Market

The Oak Street Farmers' Market is the only farmers market in Vancouver with exclusively organic fresh produce, meat, and eggs. This market relies on volunteers for assistance with market set up and take down, communications and outreach, postering and marketing, special events, and more.

QUEST Food Exchange

QUEST offers volunteer opportunities to rescue food, feed people, reduce waste and better your community.

UBC Farm

Much of the great work that happens at the UBC Farm is made possible by the continued support of the farm's dedicated volunteers. The UBC Farm volunteer program provides UBC students, staff, faculty members, and members of the wider community the chance to gain hands-on experience in many aspects of small-scale sustainable farming. Most volunteer opportunities are available during the main growing season (May-October). New volunteers are required to attend a general farm orientation before signing up for volunteer shifts.

Vancouver Farmers Market relies on volunteers to do food literacy education, communications and outreach, postering and marketing, special events, and more.

Vancouver Fruit Tree Project

This is a community-based, registered charity that works to increase access to fresh local fruit in communities throughout Vancouver.

Better Environmentally Sound Transportation (BEST)

Help with the Bike Valet Parking program or sign up for any of BEST's other sustainable transportation programs.

HUB Your Cycling Connection

HUB is a volunteer-run organization. Whether involved in advocacy, events such as Bike to Work and Great Rides, or with administrative tasks, volunteers make the difference - and they have a lot of fun doing it.

Parks and green spaces

Jericho Stewardship Group

The Jericho Stewardship Group hosts monthly events in the forested area of Jericho Park.  Get to know this gem of a natural area, while working alongside friends and neighbours to improve the local biodiversity of the park.

Stanley Park Ecology Society (SPES)

Do you want to volunteer in one of the greatest parks in the world and learn about amazing ecosystems that thrive so close to Vancouver's busy downtown core? SPES volunteers are engaged in everything from education, conservation, wildlife monitoring, and office tasks.

UBC Botanical Garden

Volunteering at the UBC Botanical Garden is a great way to expand your knowledge of plant biodiversity, meet new people, and share your love of the garden with others. They are always looking for people passionate about the plant world and eager to share their passion with others.

Vancouver Aquarium

Join the 900+ volunteers who donate their time, talents, and energy to helping the Aquarium conserve aquatic life every year, meet new friends. and learn all about the marine life right in your backyard.

VanDusen Botanical Garden and Bloedel Conservatory
