Sustainable commuting
To reduce the number of cars on the road each day, the City has created a "Sustainable Commuting" program.
This program offers incentives to City employees to encourage them to use other forms of transportation to come to City Hall each day, such as walking, biking, or car pooling. These incentives are funded by charging employees for parking.
Incentives for sustainable commuting
The Sustainable Commuting Program offers:
- Rebates on transit passes
- Monthly incentives and access to reserved parking for staff who share rides
- Incentives for biking, walking, skateboarding, and rollerblading, such as gift cards for rain gear
- Cycling skills courses and subsidized bike tune-ups
- A "Guaranteed Ride Home" program in the event of emergency or sickness
Funding the program
To fund the Sustainable Commuting Program incentives, Council introduced pay parking at market rates for employees at all City Hall lots.
Car sharing
The City has introduced a car sharing program, in partnership with Modo The Co-operative Auto Network (Car Co-op) subsidiary, The Company Car.
This program gives better access for employees who need a car for work purposes, and is more efficient than the previous departmental vehicle system.
Car sharing at City Hall also helps the neighbouring community, as the vehicles are available to residents who belong to Modo the Car Co-op on evenings and weekends.
