ADOPT A TREE FOR A MORE CLIMATE RESILIENT TOMORROW

Trees are one of Vancouver’s most important tools for adapting to climate change: they provide shade to cool our communities during extreme heat events, help improve air quality by absorbing carbon pollution, ozone and particulate matter and absorb and filter rainfall during extreme rainfall events.

Climate change means warmer dryer summers and the forecasts for this June and July are no exception. The Vancouver Park Board encourages residents to adopt a young street tree and keep it watered. The Adopt a Tree program supports the establishment of young trees (under five years old) as our Urban Forest Strategy works to grow canopy coverage to 30% by 2050, particularly in neighbourhoods like Strathcona, Sunset and Downtown where canopy cover is lower.

While crews water trees throughout the city during drier months, you can help contribute to a stronger, healthier urban forest with extra watering.

YOUR TURN

Ready to adopt a tree? Explore the interactive map for trees available for adoption and find videos and instructions on how to care for your tree.

Watering bags are available for new adopters while supplies last. During watering restrictions, Trees can be hand watered anytime, or between 5 to 9 am any day of the week if using a sprinkler.

SAVE ENERGY AND MONEY WITH ENERGY-EFFICIENT PRODUCTS

As warmer weather approaches this summer, BC Hydro is partnering with major retailers to offer discounts on energy-efficient air conditioners, air purifiers and showerheads.

This summer, deals are available for:

  • $50 off select ENERGY STAR® window air conditioners and portable air conditioners
  • $30 off select ENERGY STAR® air purifiers
  • $10 off select WaterSense®-certified showerheads

High-efficiency air conditioners and air purifiers use less energy than standard models to help lower your electricity bills as we prepare for more frequent and severe climate change-related extreme heat and poor air quality hazards.

Showers can be the largest single contributor to overall hot water use in a home, accounting for 15% of total household energy use. Switching to a WaterSense® certified showerhead, can help you use less water during a season when drought conditions are common. If your building uses natural gas to heat water, it can also lower your home’s carbon pollution emissions.

PAINT A YELLOW FISH TO PROTECT OUR WATERWAYS

Get ready to celebrate the Yellow Fish program launch this June! By marking a catch basin, you’re helping remind everyone that any pollutants and debris that flow down the catch basins goes into our waterways and can affect water quality in receiving waters and wildlife.

The storm drain (catch basin) marking program was developed by Fisheries and Oceans Canada in 1991 as a conservation and education project. It involves residents painting yellow fish next to catch basins and handing out educational door hangers in the community to explain the program.

YOUR TURN

Make some friends and flex your artistic skills by marking catch basins at our events or on your own:
