12th Avenue to reopen ahead of schedule
This afternoon, one of the city’s key east-west commuter routes will reopen to traffic following the early completion of a water main replacement.
The City began construction along 12th Avenue in July, with work underway between Kingsway and Fraser Street to replace an aging water main dating back to the 1900s. Underground pipes deteriorate over time due to soil conditions and age. The life expectancy of an underground water main is approximately 100 years.
The City also took the opportunity to make a number of additional improvements for residents along this four-block stretch of 12th Avenue, including:
- Accessibility and safety upgrades to the sidewalks
- A new curb bulge at the St George intersection to reduce crossing distance for local school children
- A fully repaved road surface between Kingsway and Fraser Street
We thank all residents, businesses, and commuters for their patience and understanding during these critical infrastructure upgrades.
