Awards of Excellence honour top citizens and organizations

“Vancouver is an extraordinary city because of the remarkable contributions of the people who live and work here,” said Mayor Gregor Robertson.

Awards of Excellence 2014 trophies

The winners of the 2015 City of Vancouver Awards of Excellence were announced this evening at a celebration hosted by Mayor Gregor Robertson and members of Vancouver City Council.

“Vancouver is an extraordinary city because of the remarkable contributions of the people who live and work here,” said Mayor Gregor Robertson. “The Awards of Excellence are a significant opportunity to honour those contributions and the community leaders who challenge our city to achieve exceptional goals, while inspiring others to get involved and to make a difference. I’d like to congratulate all of tonight’s honourees and nominees for their commitment to making Vancouver an even better city to call our home.”

About the Awards of Excellence

The Awards of Excellence celebrate those who make Vancouver a greener, healthier, more diverse, accessible, and prosperous city.

The recipients of the awards were nominated by the public, recommended by peer review committee, and confirmed by City Council, who assessed their influence, impact and achievements.

Winners of the 2015 Vancouver Awards of Excellence

Civic Merit Award

The Civic Merit Award recognizes individuals for outstanding achievement in a particular field of endeavour in sports, science, arts, or culture within the city and the province, or in recognition of a specific service. City Council must vote unanimously to honour someone with the Civic Merit Award.

  • Cameron Cathcart: recognized for his service as Chair of the Vancouver Remembrance Day Committee since 2003, and his leadership to build the annual Remembrance Day Service at Victory Square into one of the largest and most respected Remembrance Day Ceremony’s in Canada.
  • William Ma: recognized for his outstanding contributions to Vancouver as President of the Vancouver-Guangzhou Friendship Society, his leadership role in the revitalization of Chinatown and refurbishment of the historic Mah Society building which houses the Asia Hotel providing affordable and modernized housing for the community while keeping the distinct character of Chinatown.
  • Diane Clement: recognized for her outstanding accomplishments as an Olympian and the first woman to coach the University of British Columbia’s women’s track team, as well as her role in co-founding the Achilles International Track and Field Society and the Vancouver Sun Run, which is now one of the top 10K Road Races in the world.

Mayor's Achievement Award

The Mayor's Achievement Award recognizes remarkable dedication and significant contributions towards improving the quality of life for the citizens of Vancouver. The recipients of this award are selected personally by Mayor Gregor Robertson.

  • Organization: Vancouver Guangzhou Friendship Society
  • Individual: Dr. William “Bill” McMichael
  • Youth: Alex Pang

The Accessible City Award honours outstanding leadership to enhance accessibility, inclusion, and elimination of barriers to full participation for persons with disabilities.

Civic Volunteer

The Civic Volunteer Award recognizes outstanding volunteer contributions to a City of Vancouver Board or Committee.

  • Organization: Members of the Citizens’ Assembly on the Grandview-Woodland Community Plan
  • Individual: Mary Lynn Baum
  • Youth: Linh Diep

Diversity and Inclusion

The Diversity and Inclusion Award celebrates outstanding leadership to foster inclusion across diverse communities.

  • Organization: Vancouver Street Soccer League
  • Individual: Jaime Adams
  • Youth: Roan Reimer

Greenest City Leadership

The Greenest City Leadership Award recognizes individuals or groups who enhance or advance the City’s Greenest City Action Plan goals.

  • Organization: Vancouver-based Climate Smart certified businesses
  • Individual: Allen Garr
  • Youth: Tesicca Truong

Healthy City for All

The Healthy City for All Award pays tribute to outstanding leadership, by an individual or organization, in working towards creating a healthier city.

  • Organization: EMBERS Vancouver
  • Individual: Maria Luz Fernandez
  • Youth: Cecilia Bao
