Critical sewer upgrades begin along Smithe Street downtown

January 4 2018

Smithe Street

The City has begun upgrades to critical sewer infrastructure along Smithe Street from Homer to Beatty Street. The existing sewer lines are at capacity and upgrades are required to help serve this growing neighbourhood.

Work is scheduled for completion in summer 2018.

Coordinated work to minimize public impacts

This project will utilize coordinated planning to minimize public impacts over the long term — particularly on arterial routes  by simultaneously upgrading or renewing multiple infrastructure systems.

The replacement sewer will have increased capacity to support growth and has a life expectancy of 100 years. During construction, the City will also rehabilitate the street and make safety improvements to the Downtown bike network by raising and repaving the existing Smithe Street bike lane.

Ongoing work

Work along Smithe Street will typically take place Monday to Friday from 7am to 5pm. The bike lane will be closed at each block where work is active, and people cycling are asked to dismount in these areas and use the sidewalk. At least two lanes of traffic will be retained at all times on Smithe Street during construction.

Thank you for your patience

We extend our thanks to residents and travellers for their patience while this critical work is completed.
