Daycamps at community centres fill up quickly as teachers' strike continues

September 2 2014

Children and childcare feature

Vancouver Park Board and local community centre associations have almost doubled the number of daycamps and special programs for children during the BC Teachers’ strike.

Last week, there were 12 community centres across the city offering daycamps with indoor/outdoor play. This week, 21 (of 24 total) community centres are offering special programming for children 6-12 years of age. Unfortunately, most of these camps are full, and many have a waiting list.

Cost of day camp

The cost for each of the daycamp programs varies. Camps that offer out-trips cost more, while costs for inner city kids are kept low.

About our daycamp staff

Staff working with the daycamps must have a criminal record check and receive special training. Kindercare and camps for children under six require specialized licensing and more training.

Programming for children under six

There are no plans to offer programming for children under six years of age.
