Events, decisions, and reports at City Council this week

February 25 2021 –

Vancouver City Council met electronically this week to hear and discuss a variety of topics during Council, Public Hearing, and Standing Committee on City Finance and Services meetings. 

Tuesday, February 23

This week’s Council meeting began with Council approving a communication memo, five reports, four by-laws, and an administrative motion:

Council then referred the following motions to the Standing Committee meeting on Wednesday, February 24, in order to hear from speakers:

A Public Hearing reconvened on Tuesday evening to continue with unfinished business from February 16, when Council had received presentations and begun hearing from speakers on CD-1 Rezoning: 3084 West 4th Avenue and 2010 Balaclava Street (71 KB).

On February 23, Council heard from 27 registered speakers on CD-1 Rezoning: 3084 West 4th Avenue and 2010 Balaclava Street (71 KB)

Due to time constraints, the Public Hearing was scheduled to reconvene on Wednesday, February 24, at 6:00 p.m. to hear from remaining speakers.

Wednesday, February 24

The Standing Committee on City Finance and Services opened with a proclamation recognizing Pink Shirt Day on February 24, 2021, to stand against bullying.

Staff gave a presentation (656 KB) on Enhanced Enforcement on Sound Amplification Devices (141 KB). After asking staff questions and hearing from seven speakers, Council referred the report recommendations back to staff for further information and to report back on at a later date.

Next, Council received a staff report on Public Consumption of Alcohol in Proposed Parklet at 111 Princess Avenue (218 KB). After asking staff questions and hearing from four speakers, Council approved the report’s recommendation.

Council then dealt with motions referred from Tuesday’s Council meeting. After hearing from speakers and debate, all three motions were approved:

On Wednesday evening, a Public Hearing reconvened to continue hearing from registered speakers on CD-1 Rezoning: 3084 West 4th Avenue and 2010 Balaclava Street (71 KB)

After hearing from 14 registered speakers and 10 additional speakers, Council closed the receipt of public comments. 

The Public Hearing is scheduled to reconvene for debate and decision on March 2, at 6pm.
