February 27 2015

Vasek Pospisil

A tennis star is returning to his home turf at Kitsilano Beach Park tennis courts for a public celebration.

Vasek Pospisil, who won the Wimbledon men’s doubles title in 2014 with his American partner, played on the Kits courts as a junior when his family moved from Vernon so he could pursue his tennis career.

Attend the March 3 community celebration

Come meet Vasek (and perhaps even take a selfie with him) on Tuesday, March 3 at 4:00pm at Kitsilano Beach Park tennis courts, located at Cornwall Avenue and Yew Street.

Vancouver Park Board Chair John Coupar, President and CEO of Tennis Canada Kelly Murumets, and Kits Beach Tennis Club President Chris Temmerman will join Vasek Pospisil and Davis Cup ball boys and girls for the celebration.

The tennis community will recognize Vasek's accomplishments and his local ties.

Cheer on Vasek and Team Canada at the Davis Cup

Vasek is in town for the lead-up to the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas on March 6 – 8 at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre at UBC. It is the largest annual international team competition in sport with 126 nations competing in 2015. Only 16 countries entered in Davis Cup competition qualify for the World Group each year.

Vasek is on Canada’s Davis Cup team for its first-round tie against Japan. Canada is the seeded team with a Davis Cup world ranking of No. 9 while Japan is ranked No. 12.

In 2013, the Vancouver Park Board reconstructed five tennis courts at Kitsilano Beach Park to meet International Tennis Federation tournament standards.

Five other courts were resurfaced with asphalt and plexipave sports coating. The original courts were built in 1952.
