Hot dry summer requires residents to be waterwise

Lawn watering restrictions are now in effect. Our fine for watering outside of the permitted hours is $250. The record low snowpack on the mountains this spring is a reminder that potable water, even in our typically rainy climate, is a precious resource.

Watering restrictions in effect

Restrictions are in affect annually to conserve water throughout the dry summer months when rainfall is at its lowest and demand for water in the Lower Mainland almost doubles — mostly due to lawn sprinkling and outdoor water use.

Lawn sprinkling outside of the permitted hours and days is a bylaw offence. We are actively on patrol for violations. Use our VanConnect App or phone 3-1-1 to report violations or water leaks. The $250 fine is reflective of other minor bylaw infractions, such as walking a dog off-leash or smoking in a public park or beach.

When to water your lawn

Lawn sprinkling days for residential addresses:

  • Even-numbered addresses: 4:00am–9:00am on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays
  • Odd-numbered addresses: 4:00am–9:00am on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays

In Vancouver, lawns generally need only one inch of water for one hour a week to stay healthy and green. One hour of lawn sprinkling can use as much water as 25 toilet flushes, five loads of laundry, and five dishwasher loads combined.

How to be waterwise

Be waterwise throughout the summer and take action to reduce unnecessary water use to protect our drinking water supply.

Other ways you can be waterwise include:

  • Refrain from watering your lawn and let it go brown
  • Report any leaks you notice on City or Park property (indicated when an area is wet when it hasn’t rained)
  • Take action to fix any leaks in your own home
  • Ensure that irrigation systems are functioning properly and not over watering

Lawn sprinkling restrictions are in effect throughout the region until September 30.
