New senior-friendly fitness facility opening in Memorial South Park
Memorial South Park has the city’s first accessible age-friendly outdoor fitness facility.
The park was identified for this pilot project as it has an established active seniors’ group and compatible existing amenities.
Work began after Vancouver Park Board Commissioners approved a motion in November 2017 PDF file (1 MB) directing staff to proceed with the project. Surveys distributed during engagement events showed 97 percent of respondents supported a new fitness area at Memorial South Park. The outdoor fitness equipment will provide seniors with a variety of activities that they can enjoy regardless of physical limitations.
Fitness facility features
- Assisted row/push up bars
- Cardio stepper
- Ab crunch/leg lift bench
- Pull up/dip bar
- Tai chi wheels (x2)
- Hand cycler (x2)
- Parallel bars
- Balance steps
- Sensory walking pathway with handrails
- Rubberized safety surface and walking path
Nine other parks in Vancouver have outdoor exercise equipment, although Tisdall Park is the only one that features a seniors' wellness circuit.
Seniors are a growing demographic in Vancouver. By 2041, Vancouver’s population aged 65 to 74 is expected to increase by 79% and the population age 75 plus by 105%.
The Park Board is committed to supporting the growing needs of seniors. The fitness equipment at Memorial South Park will help us to achieve our goal of increasing accessible recreation and a healthy living opportunity for Vancouver’s ageing population.
Physical activity can improve mental health, help manage chronic diseases, and help prevent illness and disability.
A Colombia Institute report External web site, opens in new tab says municipal services are becoming increasingly important in providing the support seniors needs to live in the community and are usually the first line of defense in maintaining good health.
