This Saturday, local software developers will take part in a ‘hackathon’ to generate smartphone and web apps that address the City of Vancouver’s Greenest City 2020 targets and environmental opportunities.

Starting at 8:00 a.m., local web developers will team up to create an app or web service in a 12-hour period. Teams must take an idea to demonstrable a prototype, and submit a video about their creation by 8:00 p.m. Saturday evening.

Apps will be demonstrated to attendees and judges on Sunday afternoon, and prizes will be awarded from a jury comprised of cleantech business leaders.

The City is supporting the YVR Cleanweb Hackathon through its Greenest City open data sets, along with BC Hydro and the BC Government.

The first three Cleanweb Hackathons held in San Francisco, New York City, and Boston drew over 400 participants. Saturday’s YVR Cleanweb Hackathon will also run simultaneously with one in New York City.

The YVR Cleanweb Hackathon will take place at the Hive, 128 West Hastings, Vancouver. Demonstrations and jury prizes will begin at 1p.m. on Sunday, also at the Hive.
