Vancouver’s green strategies to Council for approval

Vancouver has a plan in place to become the greenest city in the world

Vancouver continue to demonstrate leadership on the environment and climate change leading up to COP21 in Paris with two significant plans going to Council on November 3 the:

Renewable City Strategy

The Renewable City Strategy sets out how Vancouver can shift to 100 per cent renewable energy by 2050 or sooner. Currently, 31 per cent of the energy consumed in Vancouver is renewable.

The strategy makes clear that the 100 per cent target is well within our reach, by focusing on three key priorities in the transportation and building sectors:

  • Reducing energy use
  • Increasing the use of renewable energy
  • Increasing the supply of renewable energy

Earlier this month at the Our Cities, Our Climate summit in Washington DC, US Secretary of State John Kerry praised Vancouver’s goal of shifting to 100% renewable energy.

“Huge wealth can be created even as you make people healthier, reduce the sickness that comes from particulates in the air and the cancer that comes with it,” said Kerry. “More and more city leaders are coming to that conclusion…it’s why Vancouver set a goal of obtaining 100% of its energy from renewable sources by 2050.”

Greenest City 2020 Action Plan

We released the mid-point update on the ambitious Greenest City 2020 Action Plan in June, including outlining a new goal for Vancouver to shift to 100 per cent renewable energy by the year 2050.

Over the summer, we engaged with stakeholders, subject matter experts, and the public to hear their input on what:

  • Actions we should take next to achieve the targets set out in the Greenest City Action Plan
  • To consider for Vancouver’s strategy to become 100 per cent renewable city by the year 2050

The Greenest City Action Plan update includes 51 new priority actions for Vancouver to take to ensure the 2020 targets are met.
