Hillcrest and Riley Park improvements

The Vancouver Park Board is improving Hillcrest and Riley parks.

Changes at both these sites have created an exciting possibility for various new park program elements, as well as upgrades and greening to other parts of both parks.

Construction began in November 2015 and is expected to be finished by September 2016.

Recent developments with this project

Construction update

May 2016 - Construction is ahead of schedule.

Project expanded with new features

August 2015 – Good news! New features will be included in Hillcrest and Riley Park renovations. These include:

  1. A Challenger Baseball diamond at Hillcrest Park , funded through a partnership with Variety - The Children’s Charity, the Jays Care Foundation, and the Vancouver Canadians
  2. A synthetic turf surface (a FIFA legacy) for the youth soccer field at Hillcrest Park

While the expanded project scope has caused some delays, it will be well worth the wait! Construction documents are now complete and will be tendered to pre-qualified contractors in August, with the contract to be awarded by the Park Board and City Council in fall 2015. Construction will begin in November 2015 and is expected to be completed by September 2016.

Since 2005

Significant changes have occurred in Hillcrest and Riley Parks over the last few years. Completion of the Hillcrest Centre as a 2010 Winter Games venue resulted in the demolition of the Vancouver Curling Club in Hillcrest Park and the Riley Park Community Centre / Ice Rink and Percy Norman Pool in Riley Park. The programming at these sites has been incorporated in the new Hillcrest Centre programming.

2005

In 2005, prior to the development of Hillcrest Centre, the Board approved the Riley / Hillcrest / Nat Bailey Stadium Parks Master Plan, which incorporated modified parking and access arrangements for the purpose of initiating the rezoning process.  The current project funding is allocated to updating the master plan for the two parks, as well as for park improvements.
