Platforms: We Are Here, Live

COVID-19 has magnified and deepened all of the social, health, and economic inequities of our society, and art-making is an important way to respond creatively to this moment. Platforms: We Are Here, Live commissioned 23 Vancouver-based and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) artists grappling with the issues revealed by a still-unfolding global pandemic.

Current projects

Jem Noble, Domestic Cosmology, presented on transit shelters across Vancouver

During the pandemic when the artist Jem Noble had to remove the surface of his home/studio floor following water damage, he was awed to find a sea of stones of many different shapes, sizes, and hues embedded in concrete — a found portrait of the Milky Way.

In this time when many people’s lives were condensed into domestic spheres, the galaxy beneath his feet reminded him that isolation is a complex feature of cosmic interdependence.

Domestic Cosmology, a poster depicting a distorted and functional QR code, will connect audiences to a video and music composition that the artist created from his own revelation of perspective on the cosmic continuum.

Robin Netherton, The Mirror of Crisis is the Alibi of Production, presented on the billboard at Arbutus and 12th

The Mirror of Crisis is the Alibi of Production is based on a modified quote from French Sociologist Jen Baudrillard’s 1981 book “Simulacra and Simulation”.

Using the Watergate break-ins as an example, Baudrillard examines how structures of power rely on crises of legitimacy to justify their ongoing existence. In the case of Watergate, the break-in, resulting scandal and resignation all serve to reinforce the realness of the implicated power structures through confrontation with their antithesis.

For this work, the quote is altered to reflect the relation between the ongoing crises of the COVID-19 pandemic and the pre-existing inequities of society. In other words, the crises found within the pandemic are reflections of the broader crises produced by capitalism and other systems that make up the production of society.

Tafui, Out of Many, presented on Vancouver Public Library Banners

Out of Many is a series of six large vinyl banners. It is inspired by the similarities of racialized and Indigenous cultures around the globe and the idea that "we belong to each other".

Tafui’s practice is informed by the idea that through the understanding of our histories and shared experiences, we become united as people, as cultures, and to the earth.

All That We Cannot Grasp is a set of photographs depicting the artist's shadow and is about reflection, projection, and movement. The work evokes notions of uncertainty and groundlessness. It is about trying to find rest in the tumult, but always moving with it. It is about adaptability.

It is an invitation to embrace the uncertain state we find ourselves in, and to try to situate ourselves in this blur and confusion.
