Impacts to traffic, parking and residents

  • During construction, there will be some lane closures and parking restrictions in McGill Street. A minimum of 1 lane in each direction will be maintained at all times. Local street parking may be affected by the presence of work trailers and construction equipment. City crews will do their best to provide as much parking for residents after working hours.
  • During the water main work, residents may notice cloudy water on occasion as a result of the construction activities; this is not a health concern and usually goes away within a few hours. There will be an advance notice to residents prior to disruption to residential water services (with the exception of emergency situations).

How this project improves the city

Improvements will be:

  • New sidewalks and disability ramps along McGill Street between Nanaimo Street and Renfrew Street;
  • Access improvement to the parking lot from New Brighton Park (to reduce vehicle short cutting);
  • New and upgraded water supply system along McGill Street from Walls Street to Kaslo Street; and
  • Repaving the full lenght of McGill Street from Nanaimo to Hwy 1 off-ramp.
